Dongle:

Anything that attached to an external port of computer is called a Dongle. To USB port, serial port or printer ports etc.,

This is a very old terminology, nearly 3 decades old, it's usage has come down these days.

Modem:

Modem is a term originated in telecom world, its generic meaning is, a device that converts communication from one protocol to another.
