B. Animal Safety Laboratory

Indian is a rich source of livestock, both in numbers and diversity. Livestock serves as a means of livelihood for majority of rural population and intensive livestock farming is an attractive growing business in urban India. There are number of infectious and non-infectious diseases that pose challenge to animal health. The uncontrolled diseases not only affect food security of the country but also negative impact on international trade. The knowledge of epidemiology disease is essential to establish methods to control, prevent or eradicate these diseases. Hence based on epidemiology of the disease, monitoring and surveillance for major infectious diseases is established. Disease surveillance has long been recognized as an important tool for measuring the disease burden, studying morbidity, mortality trends and early detection of outbreaks for instituting effective control measures in a timely manner. India has network of central departments, research institutes, state teaching/research institutes and state departments that are actively involved in generating the data through disease monitoring and surveillance which eventually is used to forecast the disease. With these systems in place, India is uniquely placed in South-Asian countries in regard to animal health and production.
