Tonkin free school was established in 1907 .

it established to provide modern education

it had classes of science,hygiene and french.

it adopted a western style of having western hairstyle like short hairstyle.it doesnot needed a identity of traditional hair

The French established French schools for Vietnamese to provide western style of education in order to westernize them.

The Vietnamese elites were influenced much by the Chinese culture.

So it was required of the French to counter this, which they did by dismantling the traditional educational system so prevalent, thereby establishing French schools for the Vietnamese.

The school taught science, hygiene and French, other than the common subjects.

For these three subjects the students had to attend evening classes and also pay separately.

The students were not only made to attend these classes but they were asked to sport modern looks too.

A typical example of this was that Vietnamese were asked to cut off their long hair and adopt a short hair cut which was absolutely against their culture.

However, these efforts met opposition by the teachers and also the students who revolted either by open opposition or by mere silence.

The Vietnamese teachers sometimes also resorted to quietly modifying the text or rather criticizing what was stated.

Thus, schools became an important place for political and cultural battles.
