Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham
Amrita University has the mission to provide value-based education and mould the character of the younger generation through a system of wholesome learning, so that their earnest endeavour to achieve progress and prosperity in life is matched by an ardent desire to extend selfless service to society, one complementing the other. Thus, the university‘s activities are based upon a deep understanding of our values and culture. This is in alignment with the educational outlook of our Chancellor, namely, - "Education for life, not just education for a living."
Amrita University was established by the renowned humanitarian leader, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, who is also the Chancellor of the University. She is also affectionately known as Amma, who has dedicated her life for the upliftment of humanity through selfless service.
The university began in November 1994 as an Institute of Technology with 120 students and 13 faculty members in the village of Ettimadai in Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu. Today, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has emerged as one of the fastest growing institutions of higher learning in India. The University spreads over five campuses in three different states of India, with its headquarters at Coimbatore. It has a student population of around 18,000 and a faculty strength of over 1700.
The university has over 150 undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs. It has 15 constituent schools in Engineering, Medicine & Allied Health, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Ayurveda, Management, Biotechnology, Arts & Sciences, Education, Communication, Nanosciences and Social Work. Research is also actively promoted in these areas.
The University is ranked along with the top institutions in India in the ivy league of Indian universities and it continues to grow from strength to strength under Amma's guidance. The Mata Amritanandamayi (MA) Math is the holding trust of Amrita University. The Math is recognized for its charitable activities initiated all over the country and throughout the world.
The MA Math also manages over 50 higher secondary schools in several Indian states and supports these educational institutions by fostering the development of individuals, who are imbibed with the highest values, in tune with the cultural ethos and traditions of our country.
Swami Vivekananda had once remarked, "We want that education by which character is formed and strength of mind is increased." At Amrita University, we are doing our part to make this happen.
